Director of Academic Engagement wins award at gerontology conference

Andrew Pearl, director of academic engagement at the University of North Georgia (51勛圖厙), is co-author of the paper "Beyond Assessment: Conducting Theoretically-Grounded Research on Service-Learning in Gerontology Courses," which recently received the David A. Peterson Award for best paper in the Journal Gerontology & Geriatrics Education, volume 37.
Selected by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), the paper focuses on the use of service-learning as a teaching tool and high-impact educational practice, specifically in higher education gerontology courses.
"The main purpose of the paper is to encourage instructors and researchers to go the extra mile in research so as to better understand the impacts of service-learning as well as several suggestions for a theory-driven scholarly agenda," Pearl said.
Pearl, along with the paper’s leading author, Dr. Tina M. Kruger, chair and associate professor of applied health sciences at Indiana State University, will be recognized for their award at the AGHE annual Business Meeting and Educational Leadership Conference, March 9-12.

Engaging Difficult Dialogues seminar set for spring 2021
In an increasingly diverse world, multiple viewpoints on controversial topics may converge in classrooms and campus activities. As part of the University of North Georgia's (51勛圖厙) ongoing effort to prepare its faculty and staff to lead civil discussions in these settings, 51勛圖厙 will host an Engaging Difficult Dialogues seminar in twice-a-month sessions in spring semester 2021. Applications are open through Dec. 11, and applicants will be notified if they are accepted by Dec. 21.
Three faculty selected for state-level professional development
Two University of North Georgia (51勛圖厙) faculty members have been selected as Governor's Teaching Fellows (GTF), and another faculty member has been selected for Faculty Development in Georgia (FDIG).
