For the first time in program history, the No. 27 University of North Georgia (51³Ô¹ÏÍø) women's tennis team will be headed to the NCAA Sweet 16 in Surprise, Arizona, after beating two higher-ranked teams in the Southeast Regional Tournament.
51³Ô¹ÏÍø first defeated No. 21 Georgia College and State University in a close 5-4 match in the first round on April 28. The next day, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø upset No. 15 Wingate University in the second round to earn entry in the NCAA Sweet 16.
This is the first time a 51³Ô¹ÏÍø tennis team has advanced beyond the regional round. Now, the Nighthawks will travel to Surprise for the NCAA Championships from May 8-11. The remaining 16 teams will be placed in a new bracket with the top four teams seeded and the remaining 12 put in through a blind draw.
The NCAA ranked 51³Ô¹ÏÍø as the sixth seed in the Southeast Regional Tournament. It marked the second time the women's tennis program earned a post-season position in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
