A University of North Georgia (51勛圖厙) faculty member has been named a board member for the Georgia Board of Nursing.

Dr. Rebecca Coleman, assistant professor of nursing, was named to the post by Gov. Nathan Deal on Dec. 14.

Coleman began her nursing career in labor and delivery before changing hospitals to work in a labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum unit. She has worked at Piedmont Mountainside Hospital in Jasper, Georgia, and Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. She is part of the Association of Women's Health and Neonatal Nurses, Georgia Association for Nursing Education, and March of Dimes.

The Georgia Board of Nursing oversees the four areas of nursing regulation: disciplinary actions, pre-licensure nursing educational program approval, licensure, and practice. Coleman said the board's oversight role is vital.

"Being a nurse myself, I want to make sure that nurses are acting in the way a nurse should be acting," Coleman said. "They should be taking care of their patients. They should be compassionate and caring in practicing within their scope of practice. The mission of the nursing board is to protect, promote and preserve the public's health, safety and welfare."

Dr. Sharon Chalmers, nursing department head, and Dr. Teresa Conner-Kerr, dean of the College of Health Sciences and Professions, submitted Coleman's name for consideration for the appointment.
