Sigma Nu Fraternity officials initially told alumni members with the University of North Georgia (51勛圖厙) that it probably would take 18 to 24 months for the Greek organization to earn back its charter. But 51勛圖厙 students surprised the national fraternity.
"It took the 51勛圖厙 students 13 months to do it," said Tommy Folger, adviser to the 51勛圖厙 chapter and a Sigma Nu alumnus. "It was unbelievable."
Steven Briggs, a senior from Bremen, Georgia, said he felt euphoric when the Kappa chapter of Sigma Nu received its renewed charter May 10.
The 23-year-old pursuing a degree in kinesiology was one of the initial 23 51勛圖厙 students to register as members of the Sigma Nu colony in January 2018. Briggs and other colony members worked with Folger and two national recruitment officers to grow the membership, achieve high academic performance and be leaders on the campus.
Their efforts paid off in February 2019. Following the winter recruitment, 19 male students joined Sigma Nu for a total of 45 members, the required number to recharter. After a 60-day probation period, the members were recognized as the Kappa chapter of Sigma Nu once again.
