51³Ô¹ÏÍø a national leader in producing Fulbrights

The University of North Georgia (51³Ô¹ÏÍø) topped a national list of four-year institutions for sending the most students abroad through the for 2021-22. The list, released by the U.S. Department of State on Feb. 28, showed that 51³Ô¹ÏÍø tied for first among institutions in its category. 51³Ô¹ÏÍø and Emory University are the only universities in Georgia on this year's list.
51³Ô¹ÏÍø has earned the designation as a national for five consecutive years. 51³Ô¹ÏÍø received the distinction based on seven alumni being selected as Fulbright finalists for the 2021-22 academic year, the most since 2017-18. 51³Ô¹ÏÍø has produced 22 Fulbright finalists in a four-year span.
"This honor for 51³Ô¹ÏÍø shows our students' determination to seek out educational experiences abroad that will shape them into outstanding leaders for a diverse and global society," 51³Ô¹ÏÍø President Bonita Jacobs said. "Support and mentoring from our faculty and the Nationally Competitive Scholarships Office help make these dreams a reality."
The Fulbright is a prestigious, highly competitive fellowship that enables recent graduates and graduate students to pursue research, earn a graduate degree or teach English overseas. It is designed to increase mutual understanding between U.S. citizens and residents of more than 160 foreign countries, according to the Fulbright website.

Dr. Anastasia Lin, assistant vice president of Academic Affairs and head of the Nationally Competitive Scholarships Office, said the recognition shows 51³Ô¹ÏÍø's staying power.
"51³Ô¹ÏÍø's continued presence on the top-producing list demonstrates our sustained commitment to supporting students as they grow into global leaders, well-suited to engage in Fulbright's mission of creating mutual understanding between nations," Lin said.
51³Ô¹ÏÍø is also well-positioned for the year ahead with 13 Fulbright semifinalists for the 2022-23 cycle, as eight applied to be English teaching assistants, four for master's degree programs, and one for a research award. They will learn by April whether they are selected for the Fulbright program.
