Visiting Military Scholars

The University of North Georgia and the Cadet Leadership Academy hosts international military faculty and instructors for the purpose of teaching, instructing or lecturing, studying, observing, conducting research, consulting, and demonstrating special skills in the general interest of international academic exchange.

Exchange Visitor Categories

Visiting Military Faculty may arrive to 51勛圖厙 in four non-student categories including:

  1. Professors are scholars who are primarily engaged in teaching. Professors may engage in research even if it is not the primary objective of their visit. They may also engage in “observation.” The eligible participant shall not be a candidate for a tenure track position. Professors are limited to one academic year at 51勛圖厙 but may be extended ​with approval from 51勛圖厙 and the Professors Home Institution.
  2. Research Scholars are scholars who are primarily engaged in research. Research Scholars may teach even if it is not the primary objective of their visit. Research Scholars are limited to one academic year at 51勛圖厙 but may be extended with approval from 51勛圖厙 and the Scholars Home Institution.
  3. Short-term Scholars are defined as "scholars coming to the United States for a period of up to six months to lecture, observe, consult, and to participate in seminars, workshops, conferences, study tours, professional meetings, or similar types of educational and professional activities.” There is no possibility of extending the program beyond six months.
  4. Specialists are experts in a field of specialized knowledge or skill, who come to the United States to observe, consult, or demonstrate special skills. (Professors, research scholars, short term scholars, and alien physicians are excluded from this category.) The purpose of the specialist category is to facilitate exchange in the areas of military, cyber, intelligence, and strategic studies. The maximum duration of this category is one year.

Military Faculty Planning Considerations

Eligibility 

International Military Faculty must be formally invited and sponsored by either the Cadet Leadership Academy and/or a 51勛圖厙 academic department.

Planning Time 

Visiting military faculty must begin planning at least six months in advance in order to prepare all the necessary supporting documents and carefully consider the complexities of immigration regulations for staffing positions and research coordination.

International Military Faculty Pre-acceptance 

In order to research, lecture, or teach full-time at 51勛圖厙, scholars must complete and or submit the following documents:

  • 51勛圖厙 Non-Paid Affiliate Form
  • 51勛圖厙 Volunteer Registration Agreement Form
  • Military Background Check/Status
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Research Plan and Intent
  • International Insurance

International Military Faculty Acceptance 

51勛圖厙 Human Resources (HR) will provide military faculty with acceptance as a 51勛圖厙 visiting faculty member.

  1. All visiting military faculty will receive:
    • 51勛圖厙 ID Card
    • Access to all 51勛圖厙 Facilities (library, dining facility, office space, etc.)
    • Access to 51勛圖厙 Intra-Net
    • Immigration Orientation (first week of arrival)
    • Campus Tour
  1. Teaching military faculty will also:
    • Meet with their 51勛圖厙 Academic Department and Department Head
    • Attend 51勛圖厙 New Faculty Orientation one week prior to classes
    • Conduct an English Proficiency Interview

Military Scholar Logistics

  • Lodging – 51勛圖厙 will support lodging for all military scholars either on the 51勛圖厙 campus or in the local Dahlonega community. Must be agreed upon between 51勛圖厙 and Military Institution.
  • Meals – Military scholars are responsible for their own meals while at 51勛圖厙. Visiting Military Scholars may elect to purchase a .
  • Airport Pickup – The GMP Team will pick up military scholars from the Atlanta International Airport.
  • Transportation – While at 51勛圖厙, military scholars are responsible for their own daily transportation to and from 51勛圖厙.
