Tina Harris, a student in the University of North Georgia's (51勛圖厙) initial Doctor of Nursing Practice cohort, has received a $5,000 .

Every student in 51勛圖厙's DNP program centers their studies around a project to benefit their current workplace. Harris's project is a financial navigation program for cancer patients. As executive managing director and advanced practice nurse at Chattanooga Tumor Clinic in Tennessee, Harris is modeling her project off similar efforts at larger health systems.

"She is a champion and advocate for cancer patients," said Dr. Julie Brinzo, assistant professor of nursing at 51勛圖厙. "I am excited her work and commitment to that population were recognized by a national oncology organization."

Harris said it is vital for physicians, pharmacists, nurses, and hospitals to be on the same page in coordination of how patients are billed to minimize the financial burden as much as possible on cancer patients.

Since beginning her DNP coursework on the executive leadership track in the fall, Harris has already appreciated the experience.

"It has given me a lot more insight on being a better leader," Harris said.

Harris earned her Master of Science in family nurse practitioner from 51勛圖厙 in 2006.
